A day in the life!

The baby girl and I have been quarantined to the house for much of this past week with the flu. Now for a stay at home mom who is an extrovert and who finds life and energy when she leaves the house and interacts with the outside world, and who has also canceled all of her social plans for most of the week because of a sick child and self, and who can't even go outside for walks because it's so cold outside it would surely prolong our sicknesses AND who's husband is gone for most of the weekend running a climbing competition, you can imagine how much I may be starting to lose my mind.

So yesterday in an attempt to DO SOMETHING, I started recording parts of my day so I could blog a day-in-the-life type of thing. A day in the life of a stir crazy mom of a toddler with the flu.

(Disclaimer: This somehow got crazy long and detailed but that is just how bored I'm getting. Please humor me. Or feel free to stop reading, it's all good.)

Paisley woke me up around 7am. I had been up with her for much of the night before, because trying to sleep when you have the flu is the worst and don't we all know it. I was very groggy so the next couple hours are kind of a blur, but I do know that I managed to feed us both breakfast, as well as get us both showered and dressed.

By the way.

"I always think there's something rather foreign about high spirits at breakfast,"
- Carson from Downton Abbey, season 4. This is my new favorite quote of all of the quotes.

So. There was a lot of booger wiping, book reading, little people arranging, and consoling of my poor, sweet, incredibly crabby toddler who in her fragile state chose to be offended by nearly everything I did. Other things that happened: I decided not to do yoga because I felt too sick, I forgot to do the laundry.

Then it was lunchtime. I watched as Paisley spread cream cheese from her bagel through her freshly cleaned hair. It was annoying, but I was glad that her appetite was starting to return. At the end of lunch she got incredibly mad at me when I started scrubbing her face and head with a washcloth instead of giving her a cookie like she asked for.

She was very, very, very mad.

Then it was naptime. I didn't make her clean up her toys and books before bed since she's been sick and since she was still distraught over the cookie and sometimes you just have to choose your battles, you know? Plus I was tired and lazy feeling.

Once she was in bed it was time to decide what to do with naptime. I really wanted to do pastels down in my studio while watching the latest Downton Abbey episode. But I also just really wanted to sleep because I was very tired. And sick and lazy feeling. So I decided to compromise and start with an hour long nap (even though I normally try to avoid them), and hope that I'd still have another hour of her naptime left once I woke up. Baby girl usually sleeps between an hour and 15 minutes and two hours, so it was a risky move. When I woke up from my nap I oh so carefully crept to the kitchen and stirred Emergence-C into my water with my finger instead of a spoon so as not to make any unnecessary noise. I was craving a dessert-like treat, as I usually am at this time of day, but our kitchen is fairly bare right now and I had eaten the last of the ice cream the night before. And we obviously had no cookies. I started digging around like a muskrat and my instincts led me to a 6 inch chocolate Santa back in the recesses of my cupboard, forgotten from Christmas.

Score! Excellent.

I headed downstairs to my studio and started Downton, ate three inches of Santa and brainstormed what I would draw. But then I heard a small, familiar, quivery voice over the moniter..."Mama..."

So I scurried back upstairs, kicking myself when I passed the laundry room and realizing I had still forgotten to put a load in. Downton and pastels would lie in wait for me until next time when I would definitely skip taking a nap, I told myself.

In order to make right the lack of dessert situation that had been bringing both of us down, I decided to make some cookies while Paisley rearranged whatever furniture she was strong enough to move in the living room. (I am serious when I say that girlfriend loves to organize, and arrange, and sort, and tidy.) I made banana oat cookies with chocolate chips (Brian insists they are actually muffin tops though).

So then we had cookies for dinner and egg salad sandwiches and clementines for dessert. Plus Paisley had peas, because sometimes I worry that if she doesn't have something from all the food groups for every meal then something might go horribly wrong. I know, it's irrational! Maybe it will wear off by my next kid.

By the way, how much longer do I have before she discovers that I am a complete hypocrite because I have her eat peas somewhat frequently but I myself will not put them anywhere near my mouth? Peas are seriously one of the worst things I could ever be asked to eat. Whenever they touch my hand I have to stop what I'm doing and run to the sink and scrub with soap because of the smell. If they are in a salad or fried rice however, I'm generally fine with it. And isn't that just funny, how these things work?

Paisley's a class-act pea eater though. She likes to eat lots of them at once, so she painstakingly tries to stack 4-5 peas between her little toddler pointer finger and thumb, dropping them several times and sighing, "uh-oh," before trying again with great concentration. It's somewhat painful to watch, but also sort of delightful, if you know what I mean.

After dinner we read books and did puzzles, and I was surprised by how she no longer needed my help to fit the pieces in. Then we walked around the rooms of the house and cleaned up our messes, with a promise of reading Corduroy Goes to the Doctor if she helped. Jammies were pulled on, toothbrushes were wrestled into mouths, more books were read, prayers were murmured and kisses given out.

Bedtime.

I breathed a sigh as I shut her door and then finally remembered to put a load of laundry in the wash.

Wondering what to do with my hot, exciting Friday night by myself, I wandered downstairs and turned on the TV, and realized it was the Olympics opening ceremony. "Cool!" I thought. I watched for about five minutes and then put in Bridesmaids instead. I laughed super loud when Annie said to Steve the flight attendant, "Are you an appliance..." Gepetto did her best to take up as much of my lap as she possibly could with her weird long body and elbowed the computer off my legs whenever I tried to check facebook.

I stayed up until the hubs came home so I could get ten minutes of adult interaction before we crashed into bed, which meant I didn't get to sleep before 1am, which turned out to not be the wisest decision since I was back up with Paisley at 5am because of her cough.

And so here we are! You now know far more than you ever hoped to about how my day went yesterday. I'll have the hubs read this later, since when he asked me what I did yesterday I was too tired to try and explain to him that it was basically nothing.

By the way, none of the pictures in this post were taken yesterday, or even very recently for that matter. I've been far too sick and tired to pick up the camera, and Paisley has had far too much snot crystalized to her face to get her picture taken.

Instagram Dump - Take 5

It's been so long since I've shared my instagram photos here that we have pictures from before the snow fell this past fall. Who can remember such a time? Surely not me. But these pictures give me evidence  that life does exist beyond the six feet piles of snow that surround my driveway and make trying to pull out into the street a somewhat stress inducing experience.

New Years talk

These guys don't get much time in the spotlight anymore. Be rest assured, they are still here and as content and lazy as ever. Except at 3am, when wrestling loudly in the bathtub while people are trying to sleep suddenly sounds like a great idea.

It was a quiet New Years at the Points house. The hubs had to work and my friend who was going to come hang out with me ended up needing to take care of her nephews so it was just myself and my baby girl. Which really, after all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season felt just fine. After putting Paisley to bed I headed downstairs to the TV with laptop in hand and watched a Modern Family marathon while editing photos, dashing upstairs during commercials to make chips and cheese or ice cream and cookies or to start the dryer one more time (does anybody else's dryer take half a day or more to dry a load of clothes when it's fifteen below outside?). At one point I did turn to PBS in time to catch Elton John singing "Levon" in concert, which was awesome because that's one of my favorite Elton John songs, and also because it included some incredible long haired cello players.

And let me tell you, Elton may be getting older but that man can still play the piano like a champ.

The hubs came home with ten minutes to spare to catch the ball drop and a New Year's smooch. Then, instead of going to bed like smart people we stayed up watching 30 Rock and snuggling for awhile because we just can't resist Liz Lemon on New Year's. Or on any day, really!

Our New Year's resolutions include drinking less caffeine and brushing our teeth more. Paisley can't really express this verbally but I'm pretty sure that hers is to master the art of using zippers so that she can break into my purse and steal all my chapsticks and tampons.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful New Years!

Lemon out.

Cats, Toddlers, Friends, The End

Here's a few pics from around these parts this last week. All of which include my baby. And her big cheeks.

Finally making nice with the cats, sweet toddler friends with matching shirts, and baby yoga. Her downward dog is better than mine. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.

18/52

Last week's photo!

I apologize for my tardiness.

It's possible that I'm running behind because last week I stumbled upon some old music and then I subsequently found myself singing along to a bunch of Dashboard Confessional songs with all the passion of an angst-ridden teen, while temporarily forgetting about blogging.

"And as for me I wish that I was anywhere, with anyone, making out!"

That line always made me chuckle. You are so silly, emo music.

But it's possible there are other reasons for my tardiness, as well.

Such as the war that I've declared on ants. I WILL defeat them.

Even if it means sweeping up the crumbs of toast that fall underneath my baby girls's high chair five or six times during a meal.

That's a lot of sweeping in a 30 minute time slot so now you can see how serious I am about this.

It's times like these that I wish we were dog people. Then we would have an automatic vacuum and mop who is also furry to keep the ants at bay.

These two are too dignified to gobble up our stray crumbs as they fall.

Unless there are goldfish crackers involved. Then they're all like, "Dignity? Never heard of it. MEEEE WAAAAANT TOOOO EEEEEAT CHEEEEEESY FIIIIIIIIISHHHH".

Instagram Dump - Take Two

Some of the latest photos from my Instagram stream, as well as a couple from the hubs'!

You should really only follow me on Instagram if you especially like pictures of cats and babies.

In breaking news, our camera is back! The hubs found it in some couch cushions. Hopefully it still works after being sat on since February.

I don't know if it does yet because I can't find the charger.

Meow

Some sketch time during the babe's nap time.

Pisica is being used to prop up my sketchbook because well, why not? This cat will put up with anything as long as she can sit in your lap.

And now that there's a baby that takes up everyone's time, she takes any lap opportunities that come her way VERY seriously.

You would think she would give some artistic input and helpful critique, but all she does is breathe heavily and allow her body to be extremely floppy as a whole.

And that's all I have to say about that.

kthanksbye

Instagram Dump

I recently jumped on the instagram train. And I looove it. I love being able to capture the little moments in life. And edit them all cool without having to open Photoshop. It appeals to my lazy side! These pics are glimpses into the life of yours truly during the last few weeks. If you already follow me there then these are oldies. But goodies.

Plus I still can't find my real camera? And I think I've looked everywhere? Paisley took it and hid it, probably. Little sneak.

It's a ballerina cat!

I bet you didn't know that ballerina cats were a thing.

The day Gepetto got her thunder back.

It's been a long time since I've posted anything about the kitties on this blog. I guess that when babies come along the pets' thunders get stolen.

Well today's the day Gepetto gets her thunder back. Here she is pretending to be a vampire.

Ya, we're scared too.

snow critters

Here's some pics showcasing some of our recent winter fun.

Paisley seems to like the cold. Just like her daddy. Opposite of me.

We went sledding!

And by sledding I mean that the hubs wore himself right out as he tied a rope to the sleigh and dragged us ladies around in the snow in the park across the street from our house.

Then he rested.

You can't tell from the picture, but I have kitty ears on my hat, too!

Crazy cat ladies, the both of us.

You know that thing where you are so desperate to entertain a baby that you just start doing whatever comes to your mind first, no matter how ridiculous it is?

Well the other day that was me shouting out the first song I could think of while trying to entertain the little miss long enough so that I could finish putting away the laundry before I snatched her up. That song happened to be Cher's "Do You Believe in Life After Love."

Not my finest moment but it as it turns out baby girl loves herself some Cher.

These dayz

I noticed today that it's been awhile since I've blogged. It seems that I have come down with a case of nesting fever and all I think about is preparing for the baby (who is coming shockingly soon, as I have realized.) I would try and make excuses for myself, but I have accepted it must be a deeply embedded instinct that has temporarily claimed my life. So I make none.

Instead I will show you some of my recent obsessions.

Wiping down some garage sale finds.

Getting happy about some Dr. Seuss books I found at a thrift store. I am SO excited about girlfriend's growing book collection.

Hanging up the super cute Pooh Bear curtains that my own mother lovingly sewed.

Here's Geppetto. She's not quite an obsession of mine at the moment, even though she totally wishes that she was.

Hopefully she gets along with the new family member! Sometimes she can be a crabby patty. But we still love her.

Today.

Today I quite proudly made it to the gym for the second time this week.

Then I came home and in a moment of self righteousness chided the kitties on their laziness.

They didn't notice. It's good that they have each other.

I ate pizza rolls for lunch but then felt guilty so I ate a banana and strawberries too.

We've been doing some updating around the house. Here's a little window corner as proof.

I did some journaling slash doodling.

I met my bro for dinner so that we could talk and laugh. And eat. He's starting a new adventure this fall going to MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design) and I am soooooo excited for him. It was a nice time and I even got to take home two mozzarella sticks that he didn't eat.

I went to Target to run some errands which ended up taking forever. Because I can't ever seem to run errands without them taking forever. It's because of my disease. My disease is called Unabletomakesimpledecisionsitis.

I rented a redbox movie since the hubs is out for the evening and I sometimes take these opportunities to watch chick flicks that I know I wouldn't be able to convince him to watch.

Now as I'm watching it with romantic weepy eyes I'm wishing he was watching it with me. Ya know?
